OpenAI and Anthropic donated 10 enterprise licenses covering up to 2,000 practitioners, with implementation playbooks expected in 2027.

But CHAI has not published privacy, data-handling, or human-review requirements, so leaders should press for those specifics before enrolling identifiable patient data.

California officials highlight AI, FireSat and predictive technologies as centerpieces in state wildfire strategy

California is running 1,260 AlertCalifornia mountaintop cameras, 915 of them AI-enabled to detect smoke and alert dispatchers before 911 calls, with 200 more planned this year. The state also taps FireSat satellites that spot fires as small as 5-by-5 meters and refresh imagery roughly every 20 minutes.

Rural Broadband's Role in the AI Economy

The framing positions small rural ISPs as AI adopters, not just infrastructure that carries other companies' AI traffic.

For resource-strapped rural providers, AI is pitched as a way to stretch limited staff and level the field against larger competitors. Rural ISPs should treat the guide as a starting point but budget for the training and experience these tools require.

Nebraska wants data centers to come clean about water usage

A new Nebraska law will require data centers to disclose annual water use and power demand to the state, which currently lacks even an official count of how many exist. Google's Nebraska facilities used about 732 million gallons in 2025, and Meta's Sarpy County site withdrew up to 37.5 million gallons in a single year.

Most of Nebraska's water goes to irrigation, and much of this drought-hit farm state is water-insecure, making disclosure a real stake for agricultural communities. Rural officials elsewhere can point to this law as a transparency model when AI data centers come knocking.

People are critical infrastructure, too. Utilities must do more or lose talent to tech.

U.S. data center electricity demand is projected to hit 426 TWh by 2030, and utilities are now competing with hyperscale tech companies for the same engineers, technicians, and project leaders needed to build out the grid. Nearly half of U.S. engineers are 50 or older, deepening the looming talent gap.

Smaller and rural utilities have the fewest resources to compete for and replace this specialized workforce. The piece argues local pipelines through community colleges and trade schools are a more sustainable fix, a practical lever for rural workforce funders and educators.
